The Singing Christians/Mercy River Boys (Wayne Christian, far right)
Former State Representative and Grammy finalist country musician Wayne Christian took the oath of office January 9, 2017 to become Texas’ newest Railroad Commissioner. Christian vowed to protect the industry and reduce burdensome regulations and will work along side Chairman Christi Craddick and former primary foe Ryan Sitton.

Christian’s staunchly conservative background is no secret. Texas monthly has twice anointed him one of the “worst” legislators (2009 and 2011) for his pursuit of the culture wars. I doubt Christian would consider this a slight as he won the “award” for defending traditional family values and fiscal conservatism. The magazine’s designation, then, is more a badge of honor for Christian and his supporters as it is proof of his conservative bona fides.
Lesser known is Christian’s membership in the Mercy River Boys/the Singing Christians, a country/gospel band. Their album “Breakout” was a Grammy award finalist in 1979. The Mercy River Boys have most recently been inducted into the Texas Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2015. Christian, a former national board member of the Gospel Music Association, was also individually inducted.
